Recent Rescues

With the rise of the “adopt don’t shop” campaign in recent years, many families turn to shelters and animal rescues when searching for their new companion. Adopting a rescue or shelter dog is a life changing experience for both your family and the lucky pup you have chosen to welcome home.

However, many new adopters are unfortunately given little background on their new canines and forced to figure it out as time goes on. Much of this is due to the fact that rescues and shelters have very little access to the individual pasts and personalities of these animals in relation to the overwhelming amount of them.

As a dog trainer and experienced animal rescuer, providing guidance to new adopters is a large part of my passion. The staggering truth is that between 7% and 20% of adopted animals are returned within the first 6 months of being in their hoped forever homes for a variety of reasons. Many of which could have been easily prevented with a bit of help along the way.

The life of a rescue dog can be significantly overwhelming. From being rescued from indescribable circumstances to transported sometimes across the country and then placed in one or many foster homes, it is difficult for these dogs to understand the weight of being adopted on day 1. For most, the decompression period after being adopted lasts for around 3 months. During which you and your dog are learning more about and becoming increasingly more comfortable with each other everyday.

Recent Rescue Lessons are curated specifically for those who have adopted a rescue dog within the last 3 months and are still navigating the decompression journey. My job as a trainer at this time is to assist you and your family in discovering all that you can about your new pup while helping you set the tone for their FUR-ever.
